Most sweet cherry trees need another cherry tree for good pollination and fruit set. There are a few cultivars considered self-fertile (Black Gold and Lapin, for instance) but even they will develop a larger crop if a second tree is planted in the landscape. Sour cherry trees will produce fruit without cross pollination.
