The Q&A Archives: Daylily

Question: I planted some daylilys and now there are some littel black things all over there stems. It rubs off and is not hard. What do I do? What is that? Thank you Ramona

Answer: If the black is like a powdery coating, it could be sooty mold. Check your plants for insects such as aphids. When they feed they exude a sticky substance called honeydew. It can turn black and although it won't harm your plants, it looks unattractive. Control the insects with insecticidal soap sprays. Good luck with your daylilies.
