The Q&A Archives: narrow hedges/shrubs w/thorns

Question: Could you please tell me a few names of shrubs or hedges that grow tall but are narrow (no more than 36 inches wide at the absolute most) that have thorns? We had to put in a privacy fence to keep our rotten neighbors off of our property and we still own 39-40 inches past the fence. I want to put something thorny there so we don't mow there/they will stay away from fence. Zone 5.Thanks!

Answer: Knock Out roses might work, Barberry is another suggestion although it will need to be pruned to maintain only 3' in width. 'sky pencil' Holly (Ilex crenata) is another suggestion. It grows upright and has prickly leaves. Good luck with your new shrubs.
