How do I prevent the sticky residue which forms on the leaves of my bonsai gardenia plant?

You should probably check to see whether there's a colony of aphids or scales living on the gardenia. Usually these sucking insects leave behind a sticky residue. Wash the plant off, using plain water, and carefully inspect the undersides of leaves and all of the stems. If you find scales, remove them with a dampened cotton swab. Removing the insects should remove the problem.
