Snapdragons were growing beautifully. Now they're attacked by zillions of black bugs that are stuck on the plant? scales? What to do?

Scales don't usually bother snapdragons and they don't show up in hordes overnight so I am fairly certain you are dealing with aphids. Zillions of black bugs could be black bean aphids. These can be controlled with insecticidal soap sprays or hosed off with a strong stream of water from the hose. Good luck with your plants!
