The Q&A Archives: Chrysanthemum blooms

Question: should you prune back the plants in June to get a full flowering bloom in the fall

Answer: Yes, pinching back the plants will make them bushy and will delay the flowering until this fall. You can simply pinch back the tip of each stem every 3-4 weeks until late summer or you can cut the mums back twice a year. In June, I cut back the chrysanthemums to 2" in height. In July, I cut them back to 6" in height. Since I have started doing this I have full, lush mums that bloom September through October.
