I just purchased a Plant Code:THDA2484, Oshio Beni, about 6 ft. tall. As far as I can tell, it has never bveen pruned. I looks more like a tall bush. I would like to begin pruning it to make it more like a tree. Any tips on when and how?

Your new tree can be limbed up but wait until this winter when it is dormant. Pruning now will encourage additional growth along the trunk, which is what you want to avoid. Pruning in the winter while the tree is dormant will result in new topgrowth the following spring. Oshio Beni likes to grow as a shrub so you'll want to rub out any stem or leaf buds that appear along the trunk in the future.
