The Q&A Archives: Japanese Maple

Question: I planted a Japanese Maple about three weeks ago and the leaves are shriveling up in spots, any ideas why? It gets watered three times per week.

Answer: If the leaves are pleated, its just a sign of transplant stress; if the leaves are shiveling and turning brown, it's an indication of sunburn. Either way, your maple should adjust to its new planting site and recover. When it does, you'll see healthy new growth. I'd water deeply only once or twice a week. Too much water can suffocate the roots of your new tree.
