My neighbor has clematis flowers that i like. Can I propagate it from cuttings ? When is the best time to do that ? We are in zip 95154 and what is the best way to have new plants ? Many thanks . |
You can root tip cuttings in a container filled with dampened soilless potting mix. Take about a six inch piece, remove the leaves from the bottom half and insert it firmly in the mix. Use a rooting hormone if you wish. Cover the pot and cutting with a plastic bag to conserve humidity and set it in a bright location out of direct sun so it will not overheat. Check periodically for roots and open the bag from time to time to allow some air exchange. When the plant has rooted, remove the bag gradually to accustom it to the normal humidity levels and then plant it in the garden. An easier way would be to layer the vine by taking a strand, setting it along the ground and burying a few leaf nodes. (Leave the growing tip exposed above ground when you do this so it makes a "U" shape. ) Roots should form on the underground portion and then it can be separated from the "mother" vine and transplanted. |
