I have always had a beautiful garden in Michigan, but here in Virginia I am stumped. My Royal Purple beans started getting a black/brown spot on them so I treated them with Sevin then I noticed it spreading to other plants, potatoes, peppers, squash and now corn and my sweet potatoes. HELP!!! What could this possibly be and how do I correct it. I use Burpee seeds and plants and followed the directions as I usually do. We live in the mountains where there a lot of trees. We fertilized with 10-10-10 and use Miracle Gro. This is going to destroy everything it looks like. Thanks for your help

Doesn't sound as though you're having a very happy gardening experience in your new garden. Vegetable gardens need full sunshine all day, so if your garden is shaded by the trees, your veggie plants will suffer. Black or brown spots might indicate a disease, especially if it is spreading to other plants. If your veggies are overcrowded, subjected to shade rather than sunshine, or if the weather has been cool and damp, it's possible a fungal disease has taken hold. Diseases can sometimes be stopped in the early stages if you remove affected leaves before the problem can spread. If your entire garden is affected, that won't be practical. You may have to resort to using a fungicide in your garden to arrest the disease. The product Sevin is a powerful insecticide, used against a variety of insects, but is also extremely toxic to bees. If you used the insecticide to treat the spots, you used the wrong product. Its really important to read the labels of the chemicals you use, and to make sure that both the problem and the targeted plant are listed on the label. As you have experienced, using the wrong product can make a bad situation worse!
