There are a couple of approaches. First, a thick mulch will keep most weeds from growing, especially if you apply a pre emergence product such as Preen prior to laying a 3 inch thick layer of organic mulch. Or, you can use weed barrier cloth (again to block sunlight and keep weed seeds from germinating) and cover it with decorative bark. It is easier to install landscape weed blocker fabric on an empty bed and then cut holes or X's in the material to plant your perennials, but if your garden is already established you can lay pieces of weed block between the plants or even use several thicknesses of newspaper on the bare soil and place a few inches of organic mulch over the top. I don't think sprays are nearly as effective and you run the risk of damaging your plants. Best wishes with your flower beds!
