The Q&A Archives: Pot for gloxinia

Question: Since gloxinia are said to be a lot like African violets, can I use a self-watering AV pot for it?

Answer: Gloxinia is a relative of African Violets and has similar growing requirements.
Experts tell us to avoid watering the crown of the plant as it will tend to rot. Many growers irrigate from the bottom (fill the saucer ? let it soak up for an hour and then dump excess water out). A self watering pot should work well but if your gloxinia begins to show some distress, you may have to adjust the watering and allow the reservoir to dry out periodically. Good luck with your gloxinia!
