my cukes and squash got off to a great start in April- i have 1 that is >12

I think your timing is off a bit. Not much will grow in your garden at this time of year. It is better to plant in March so you can harvest by the first of June and then to plant again around the first of September so you can harvest everything by December. The weather just is not right for your cukes and squash, even in the shade, so I don't think you'll get much of a harvest from either of them. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!
