Can you shred magnolia leaves that have fallen and some have black spots on the back and use them as mulch in your beds?

The black spots are either a fungal or a bacterial disease so I would tend to compost the leaves before using them as mulch. While most diseases are host specific, there's no point in spreading potential diseases around in your garden.
