A thick mulch is your best defense against weeds in a veggie garden. You can use grass clippings, straw, or even thick layers of newspapers or corrugated cardboard. Anything that excludes sunlight will keep weed seeds from sprouting and will smother existing weeds. If possible, clear the area of weeds first, then lay down a thick mulch over the bare soil and between the plants. You'll have fewer weeds. Or, you can lay down landscape fabric and cover over it with straw or compost to make it look more natural. Best wishes with your garden.
