My front lawn has bermuda grass. We would like to take out two thirds of it and put in a patio plus plant different flowers. How should we get rid of the grass but still have the soil ready to accept the new plants?

I'd rent a sod cutter. This machine cuts below the root system of the bermuda, then slices out, and rolls up strips of sod. The ground will be level when you've finished and you can plant immediately.
