Your mulch is simply decomposing and once you turn it and expose it to fresh air, the mold will die off. It won't hurt your trees or other plants to keep the mulch in place. To avoid this in the future, simply rake the mulch once or twice during the year to expose the inner and lower parts to fresh air. Best wishes with your landscape!
