Coleus can be kept compact and attractive with regular pinching. Pinch out any flowers that appear, and pinch the tips out of side branches to promote additional branching. If you allow flowers to form, the plant will stop growing and put all of its energy into developing seeds. You can root cuttings in water, if you're interested in increasing your collection of coleus. Coleus needs rich, loose, well-drained soil, lots of water, and regular feeding. Apply a liquid fertilizer high in nitrogen every 3 weeks to keep the plants vigorously growing.
