Sounds very odd to me! You may be scalping the lawn when you mow; the dead areas may have been overfertilized or weed control products overapplied; the soil beneath the patches may be compacted; or some neighboring kids are fooling with your head! You can rake out the dead areas and reseed. If you think compaction might be a problem you can aerate the soil beneath the lawn and spread some sand or compost over the aerated areas, then reseed. Good luck with your lawn!
