| I have some beautiful banana trees in the backyard and was wanting to replant them in the front of the house. How large is the root structure on a banana tree? What would I need to do to go about replanting them? |
| Bananas are actually an herbaceous plant rather than a tree. Their roots spread extensively from the base of the plant but are not as important as the plants basal structure in transplanting. Bananas transplant quite easily. Just dig up the plant taking a section of soil about a foot out from the base. Set the plant in the new location and water it in well. You may have better results if you cut the trunk(s) off where it is about 3-4 inches in diameter. This will remove most of the leaves and cut down on transpiration water loss until the plant has had time to establish. The plant will send out new leaves from the center of the cut stub.
