| HI.. Can I transplant my peonies in the fall? If so, when? When is the earliest I can do this? Also, when is the earliest I can transplant alot of perennials this fall? Thanks, Dorian |
| Most perennials can be dug and divided at the end of the summer when they have stopped flowering. You can dig and divide them now, but they may stop blooming until they become re-established in their new homes in your garden. Peonies are an exception. Wait on the peony until after frost kills back the tops of the plant. That will signal the roots to go into dormancy. Once they're dormant you can move them without problem. If you dig and transplant now you'll interrupt the process and your peony may sulk for 2-3 years. Be sure to replant at the same depth as it was previously growing; planting too deep will keep it from flowering. Best wishes with your garden! |
