I went to a couple of stores that were not garden stores and was seeking out pots for planting. I did not know the size of the pots. How do you measure a pot in the event this should happen?

Pots are usually measured by diameter. So, a 6" pot will be 6 inches across, measured at the top of the pot.

Of course the depth and shape of the pot can make a big difference as well. Tall narrow pots will be better for plants that like moist conditions and shallow wide pots are better for plants that like dry conditions.

Hope this answers your question.
