| I recently tasted kumquats and have saved the pits. What is the best way to get these to sprout? |
| Kumquats are fruit in the citrus group and resemble miniature oranges (about 1" diameter). Like most citrus their seeds will germinate best when planted directly out of the fruit. If allowed to dry, your germination may be reduced. Although trying to grow a kumquat from seed is an interesting challenge, I would suggest you purchase a plant already grafted to a proven variety for best results. This way you get a good variety on a good rootstock. Your seedling will most likely not have the fruit quality of a grafted plants nor the rootstock characteristics. Also, it could take several years to come into bearing, being a juvenile seedling. But, if this is just a "gotta try it" thing...have fun! |
