We followed planting guide on back of asparagus package bought from Southern States suppliers here in Fairfax County Virginia. Three plants out of the 18 planted have germinated. We wondered if you could shed some light on what might have occurred or at least tell us the planting schedule on when we can re-plant.

I'm sorry to hear the asparagus didn't perform well. Asparagus is best planted in early spring. This allows it the maximum amount of time to grow a large crown during the spring and summer months. If the crowns you purchased looked pretty dry and wizend, they may not have had enough oomph left in them to grow. Soil that is too wet or dry can delay sprouting or even kill the crowns, especially if they were weak to begin with. Does Southern States offer any kind of guarantee on their live goods? Ask them if they'll offer you a replacement voucher for fresh crowns next spring. Get your crowns as soon as they arrive at their store! Better luck next year!
