The Q&A Archives: Cutting back mums

Question: Should mums be cut back and is now the time?

Answer: To delay blooming, mums are typically pinched back several times (about every two weeks or so) beginning when they are a few inches tall and ending in mid July. This also encourages them to be denser and bushier. You can cut them back now and then pinch them when they develop 3-4 inches of new growth, and each time they develop 3-4 inches of new growth until mid or late July. They should bloom beautifully for you this fall. Enjoy!
