Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to the tree to protect the bark. Most experts now agree that you should not paint anything on tree wounds to protect them--that only slows the natural healing process. The plant should grow more leaves this season--just try to "baby" it a little, making sure it has adequate water all summer, avoid any disturbance to the soil, etc. Let's hope for a calm summer!
