A recent hailstorm damaged our small fruit trees. What should we do to protect the bark? (The hailstorm was quite severe, breaking our windows, etc.) Also, the storm stripped the leaves off -- will more leaves grow this season? |
Wow, that sounds like quite a storm. We had some small hail, and even some sleet, in early June here in Vermont, so I can sympathize. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to the tree to protect the bark. Most experts now agree that you should not paint anything on tree wounds to protect them--that only slows the natural healing process. The plant should grow more leaves this season--just try to "baby" it a little, making sure it has adequate water all summer, avoid any disturbance to the soil, etc. Let's hope for a calm summer! |
