The Q&A Archives: Transplanting Phlox

Question: I have some phlox that keeps spreading over the mulch and does not form roots. Can it be moved?

Answer: You can move creeping phlox (Phlox subulata) almost any time during the growing season, although spring is best. First, water the plant well the day before you plan to move it. Next, trim back the top by about half, carefully dig up the root ball and then immediately replant in the new location. Water the plant to settle it in place, and be sure to water it regularly until it is well established in the new spot. Good luck!
