Sandy soils drain extremely well but they won't hold enough moisture to keep turfgrasses happy. If you mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil where it's hard to grow grass you'll see a big improvement. Organic matter will hold moisture and the roots will be able to work their way down into the amended soil, which should keep the grass happy and healthy. Good luck with your turf!
