My 30 year old Southern Magnolia has lost many leaves at the top seems to have some kind of sucker attached here and there

It is normal for Magnolia grandiflora to drop leaves in the spring before new growth, but sparse leaves can also be the result of too much shade and of water stress the previous summer. Make sure it is well watered throughout the summer, and I suspect it will leaf out and look fuller. If you haven't already, you might feed it with Holly Tone or other acidified fertilizer.
