There are patches of grass missing in my backyard that need to be filled in. What is the easiest and cheapest way to fix this?

There are patch kits you can purchase but they may be expensive if you have several areas that need patching. An alternative would be to rake the bare areas to remove the dead grass and roots, then spread a half inch of compost over the area and dig it in lightly, overseed the areas, water them in well, and keep them moist until the grass germinates (usually 7-10 days). Once the new turf is up and growing, it can be watered and mowed just like the rest of your lawn. Good luck with your project!
