The Q&A Archives: Iris Bed

Question: I get Johnson grass in my Iris bed every May or June. I have just pulled it all out. Can I put any thing in the bed to keep from getting these back without harming my Iris.

Answer: Even though the iris rhizomes are close to the soil surface, you can use weed barrier landscape fabric to keep weeds out of the bed, or you can simply lay several sheets of newspaper over the bare earth and cover that with landscape bark or compost. The thick layer of newspaper will suppress weeds and suffocate any grass that tries to grow.
