The Q&A Archives: lack of blooms on roses

Question: i have a rose bush that is several years old that this year has only produced sucker vines and no flower blooms, please advie

Answer: Hybrid tea roses should bloom every year on the current year's new growth. Since it grows but does not bloom, I suspect what has happened is that the grafted top died over the winter and now the rootstock rose is growing instead. Unfortunately, if I am right, the only thing to do is to replace it. If you do, make sure to protect the graft union over the winter to help insulate it from cold winter temperatures. I'm sorry about your rose.
