The Q&A Archives: My basil plants have brown spots on the lower leaves,

Question: I planted basil for the first time and have noticed brown spots on the lower leaves. I did not see any pests. What is it?

Answer: The spots may be caused by environmental conditions, insect feeding or disease. Whatever the cause, there's nothing you can use against the problem if you intend to eat the leaves. I would just pinch off the affected leaves. New leaves will emerge and they should be healthy. Best wishes with your basil.
