I planted basil for the first time and have noticed brown spots on the lower leaves. I did not see any pests. What is it?

The spots may be caused by environmental conditions, insect feeding or disease. Whatever the cause, there's nothing you can use against the problem if you intend to eat the leaves. I would just pinch off the affected leaves. New leaves will emerge and they should be healthy. Best wishes with your basil.
