The Q&A Archives: poison ivy

Question: We just made 3 4x4 square foot gardens. Too late, we notice poison ivy about 4ft away, climbing up a fence. CAN I cut the poison ivy at ground level, put ROUND UP or something else, AND NOT effect the vegetables root system. Any HELP will be greatly appreciated.

Answer: Your plan is a good one. Cut the vines at ground level and immediately paint the cut stubs with Round Up. The product will move down through the root system but will not translocate into the soil. Round Up breaks down in the presence of sunlight and fresh air and does not remain or move in the soil. Best wishes with your eradication project!
