The new grass i seeded came up fine but has now yellowed at the base. It is quite shady now after the leaves.

If it is yellowing at the base of the leaves, the soil is too wet. Try watering less often, but water for a longer period of time so the moisture travels deeply into the soil, which will encourage the roots to grow deeply, too. This way the roots will get the moisture they need and you won't need to water so often that the top of the soil remains too moist. Best wishes with your lawn.
