The Q&A Archives: Kelthane Safety

Question: Is Kelthane for mites safe? What other miticides are generally safe? Marilyn P. Rosario Laguna, Philippines

Answer: First of all, where are your mites? If they are on indoor plants, there are some simple, non-toxic choices. Try using insecticidal soap, or even plain water mixed with a little dish detergent. Mites like hot, dry conditions, so just misting daily and keeping the area cool and well-ventilated can provide some control. When spraying, concentrate on the undersides of the leaves where the mites tend to congregate. If your mite problem is on outdoor plants, you might be able to control it by hosing down plants regularly. You can also use an insecticidal soap labeled for outdoor use. If you do choose to use a pesticide like Kelthane, be sure to read and follow the label directions very carefully.
