How long does it take for the tomatoes to turn red? Also, why do some of the tomatoes seem to crack at the base of the fruit?

Some varieties are simply more prone to cracking than others, but the most common reason for cracking is excess moisture following a dry period. This causes the inside of the tomato to swell beyond the capacity of the skin to hold it. Try to keep the soil evenly moist (but not soggy). Mulching can be of help with this. How long it takes a green tomato to turn red depends upon the variety you are growing. It will go from deep green to light green to pinkish to red. You can sometimes tell it's about to start this process because you can see deep green shoulders on the fruit with the rest of it beginning to lighten up. Just be patient with your tomatoes. It can take several weeks for them to mature.
