Magnolias drop their oldest leaves this time of year so it is probably a natural shedding, especially if there is new growth and the tree looks healthy. The only thing to be concerned about is that magnolias have shallow roots and are therefore very sensitive to fertilizers and/or weed control products. Be careful with these products under the canopy of the tree, especially if have turfgrass growing under the tree. Best wishes with your magnolia.
