Salvias are a very popular group of plants and deservedly so. Both the annual and perennial varieties prefer full sun and rich, moist but well drained soil well amended with organic matter. A summer mulch is beneficial, along with a light application of compost or a balanced granular fertilizer according to label instructions in early spring and again in early summer. Removing spent blooms, or "deadheading" will lengthen the blooming period. The perennial types should be trimmed back after frost and although quite cold hardy, require excellent drainage to survive the winter. |
