| I have a Jackmanii clematis that is growing very well but the flowers don't open completely. It is in a southern location and recieves plenty of sun.The base of the plant is between 2 small evergreen shrubs and shaded most of the day. What am I doing wrong, and how can I help the buds to open fully? |
| The conditions you describe sound perfect for your clematis. The plants do best in rich, loose, fast draining soil, with the roots shaded and the tops in full sunshine. Jackmanii hybrids are vigorous plants that flower on new wood, and flower best if the plant is severely pruned in the early spring, just as the buds begin to swell. Try pruning your clematis to encourage new blooms, and be sure to supply adequate water to the plant while it's actively growing. |
