The Q&A Archives: Fern With Flowers?

Question: Please help me identify this plant and tell me how to care for it - basically it looks like a Boston fern with little purple flowers on it. Bought at a garden shop, it only says "annual", and no other information.. Thanks for the help!

Answer: The plant is probably Osmunda regalis, the Royal Fern. It grows best in a shady location, in moist soil. The plant is considered hardy from zones 4-9, so may very well winter over in your locale. Expect the top to die down in the winter, but the roots should survive if you mulch them heavily. Good luck with your new acquisition!
