With only a few exceptions, Japanese maple trees do best when they get morning sun and protection from hot afternoon sunshine. It may be that the leaves are showing signs of sunburn. Some maple trees will outgrow this as they mature and the foliage becomes better able to endure summer sunshine, but some won't.
