We are adding a retaining wall with a planting area around our pool lanai and I'd like to put tropical flowers and greenery in it. What plants can be used to create a green and coloful area without getting too tall and blocking the sun into the pool. It will be a northern and eastern exposure area with some shade from an existing orange tree.

Aglaonema, Anthurium, Dieffenbachia, and Caladiums are naturals for tropical foliage.
Blue Daze, Lily of the Nile (Agapanthus species), Peacock Ginger (Kaempferia species), Ornamental Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas) and daylilies are also good choices. Enjoy!
