I'm growing jalapenos in containers, and I have had plenty of peppers appear. But they are bland. Is regular potting soil insufficient to produce adequately "hot" jalapenos?

There are three possibilities:
1) You have chosen a mild variety of jalapeno, such as TAM Mild or Senorita.
2) Your peppers are young and growing luxuriously and may need to mature a bit to reach their potential heat level. Pepper experts tell us that slightly stressed plants usually produce hotter fruit. So a brief drought spell may make a little difference.
3) You are just "one tough hombre" and need to move up to a hotter pepper like tabasco or (brace yourself) habanero.

Good luck with those peppers. How about having a mild mannered neighbor try the peppers to see if they concur that the fruit lacks heat!
