We have a pygmy date palm with 3 stalks. It is about 4 ft. high we have had it for 3 years. The shortest stalk is drying out and the fronds are turning brown. What would cause this?

Sounds like root rot. Dig down into the soil and see if the roots are mushy. If so, dig out the dying stalk, roots and all to keep it from spreading to the rest of the plant. Then adjust your watering so the soil has a chance to dry out slightly between waterings. Best wishes with your pygmy date palm.
