The Q&A Archives: new garden

Question: how can i keep grass and weed out of my new flower bed?

Answer: If the bed has not yet been planted, keeping weeds out will be easy - just lay weed barrier landscape fabric over the bed and cut slits or X's for each of your plants. When it is all planted you can place organic mulch over the the bed to help hide the weed barrier. If you've already planted your plants you can sprinkle a pre emergent herbicide (such as Preen) onto the bare soil and then spread organic mulch over the top. Pre emergence products will keep weed seeds from sprouting. If you already have weeds popping up you can hand pull them or smother them with several thicknesses of newspaper or cardboard laid in the bed and covered with organic matter. Best wishes with your new flower bed!
