When can I leave a clay pot outside all winter in Michigan? Should it be empty, full, painted inside and out? What is best?

Terra cotta pots are fragile in that extremely cold temperatures will make them crack. Even the very thick pots which are coated inside and out are prone to cracking in the winter weather. I'd move them into a garage or basement for storing during the winter months rather than take a chance that they might shatter in the cold.
