| I HAVE A RAISED BED 3'X8'. MY TOMATOES & SQUASH ARE HUGE & CLOSE TOGETHER SO I TIPPED MY SQUASH PLANTS OUT OF THE BED. WE HAVE BEEN HAVING HEAVY RAIN W/ HOT DAYS -ZONE 7/8. MY SQUASH ARE ROTTING WHEN THY'RE UNDER THE VINES OR ON THE GROUND IN THE BED. I DON'T SEE HOW U CAN STAKE THEM LIKE TOMATOES. THE VINES BREAK/OOZE WATER. WHAT SHOULD I DO W/ THEM? |
| I don't think you can stake them once they are full sized vines (although you can train them up a trellis when they are very young - it's too late now to do that with your vines). You can set the squash on a padding of straw to keep them off the soil and to slow or stop rotting. I sometimes just slide a piece of plywood beneath my squash and melons to keep them off the wet earth. The plywood dries faster than the soil or even the straw so that might be an option for you. Next year when you plant, put your tomatoes in the center of the garden and the squash along the edges so the vines can trail out as far as they need. Good luck with your garden. |
