I planted miscanthus grass next to a oriental poppy. It has grown so wide that it now blocks the sun for the poppy and it does not bloom anymore. Can I move the poppy without killing it and when should I move it? |
Oriental poppies are very difficult to transplant because of the way their brittle root system grows. The best time to try though is in the late summer when they are dormant because moving them when they are actively growing can kill them. Be careful in digging and try to take the whole thing because bits of root left in the ground may regrow into new plants. Broken root pieces can also be planted to start new plants -- just be sure to plant them right side up. Good luck with the move. |
