The Q&A Archives: Growing Allium

Question: What is my garden zone in Cheshire CT - 06410? Is allium a good choice and what variety would be best?

Answer: Allium cernuum or nodding onion is a good choice, as is Allium textile or textile onion. Both of these ornamentals are hardy to zone 6 and are not frost tender. Both are in leaf from February to December, in flower from June to July. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by bees. The plants prefer light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and require well-drained soil.
